The number of computers world-wide has exceeded one billion and that number is expected to double by 20151, making the need for low power PCs like Leef's even more serious. Other manufacturer's computers are inefficient and household and office energy drains. So just what impact are old computers having on the world?

Serious Environmental Impact Old Computers

The electricity computers run on is supplied by power plants that release large amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere during operation. While some power plants are better than others, on average a high-end computer with a monitor from Dell or Apple releases up to 500kg of CO2 per year2. The CO2 traps heat from the sun in the earth's atmosphere causing temperatures to slowly rise. Here are some of the serious impacts caused by old computers:

  • Ice is melting worldwide, especially at the Earth's poles. This includes mountain glaciers, ice sheets covering West Antarctica and Greenland, and Arctic sea ice.3

  • Researcher Bill Fraser has tracked the decline of the Adelie penguins on Antarctica, where their numbers have fallen from 32,000 breeding pairs to 11,000 in 30 years.4

  • Sea level rise became faster over the last century.5

  • Some butterflies, foxes, and alpine plants have moved farther north or to higher, cooler areas.6

  • Precipitation (rain and snowfall) has increased across the globe, on average.7

  • Spruce bark beetles have boomed in Alaska thanks to 20 years of warm summers. The insects have chewed up 4 million acres of spruce trees.8

Computers cause about 2% of global carbon dioxide emissions.9

Consumers Save Big With Low Power PCs

Leaving a traditional computer on for an entire year use will use 1,000 megawatts of electricity and releases over a ton of bon emissions each year. "If all of the world's 1 billion PCs were powered down for just one night, it would save enough money to light up New York City's Empire State Building-inside and out-for more than 30 years.10" Leef low power PCs not only use 22% less energy, but with our new Viewsonic green PC monitors consumers can save over $50 a year on energy bills11.
Leef has eliminated many unsafe materials from it's green products like lead, mercury, cadmium and chromium, which pose potential health risks to production workers and environmental risks to water supplies near landfills where they are eventually dumped12. Leef low power PCs have elmininated brominated flame retardants, another common material used in computers known to have an impact on humans13. Leef computers are RoHS and Energy Star certified so you can trust our products are green and eco friendly.

Energy savings made possible by Leef computers:

Businesses Cut Costs With Leef Green Computers

Nearly half of all corporations in the United States use old, inefficient computers, and what's worse is that these computers do not get turned off at night, costing U.S. businesses $1.72 billion in annual energy costs14. If every corporation used a Leef low power PC, those expenses could be lowered by up to 22% every year - that's $378 million dollars in the U.S. Economy.

Reducing that waste can help U.S. businesses reduce costs and prevent tons of damaging greenhouse gases from being emitted into our atmosphere. Not only that, but these computers are expected to emit 20 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions15. This is equal to about 4 million cars running for the equivalent time16. If the world used Leef eco friendly, low power PC that figure would drop to only 15.6 tons.

Leef's Low Power PC Contributes To The World

The global effort to reduce the emission of greenhouse gasses like carbon diode could cost the world economy 3% of its total output by 2030. That is, by 2030 the world economic output could be 3% lower than what it would otherwise have been due to the cost of the programs to fight carbon pollution.17.
